Shimano doesn't tie pad shape strictly to the XT/SLX/Deore naming tier. Instead, pad shape is tied to the specific calliper model number (stamped on the calliper body, something like BR-M8100 or BR-M6100), and the same pad shape is often shared across multiple tiers and even multiple generations. That's genuinely useful once you know it, since it means a lower-tier pad can often work in a higher-tier calliper, but it's also exactly why searching by "XT pads" alone leads people to the wrong part.

Find Your Caliper Model First

Before matching a pad, find the model number stamped on your calliper body. It'll look like BR-M8100 (XT), BR-M7100 (SLX), or BR-M6100 (Deore). This number, not the marketing tier name, is what actually determines pad shape.

Always confirm piston count (2 or 4) before ordering; this matters more than the tier name. A 4-piston calliper and a 2-piston calliper from the same tier use different pad shapes and are not interchangeable.

What the Pad Codes Mean

Shimano's pad codes follow a pattern once you know it:

  • First letter (B, G, J, L, M, N): Indicates the pad shape/generation family
  • Number (02, 03, 04): Compound and design revision
  • Last letter (A, C, S, Ti): Compound type, A is resin, C is ceramic, S is sintered/metal, Ti is metal with titanium backing plate

So a G03A is a resin pad in the G-series shape, while a G03S is the sintered version of that identical shape. Same fitment, different compound, which is genuinely useful if you're switching compounds without changing callipers.

Cross-Tier Compatibility: What Actually Matters

The practical upside of shared pad shapes: if your local shop is out of stock on the exact tier-matched pad, a compatible pad from an adjacent tier works identically in terms of fit and function. The compound (resin, sintered, or semi-metallic) matters more for performance than which tier's name is printed on the box.

The one thing that doesn't cross over: piston count. A 4-piston calliper pad will not fit a 2-piston calliper, regardless of tier.

How to Double-Check Before You Order

  1. Find the calliper model number stamped on the calliper body.
  2. Count the pistons if the model number isn't legible (look at the pad slot from the wheel side).
  3. Match against the chart above, or bring the old pads or the bike in and we'll match them on the spot.

Can I put XT pads in a Deore calliper?

Yes, if the piston count and calliper model match the same pad shape (see chart above). The tier name doesn't restrict compatibility; the calliper model number does.

Do 2-piston and 4-piston Shimano pads look different?

Yes, 4-piston pads are visibly larger with more friction material. They are not interchangeable regardless of tier.

Are older Shimano callipers compatible with current pads?

Often yes within the same generation (e.g., M8000-series XT still uses M03S-family pads), but Shimano has changed pad shapes across major generations. Always confirm against the model number rather than assuming.
